🗺️ Step 1: Start With "Ask Maps" Your AI Trip Advisor
The biggest upgrade hiding in plain sight is Ask Maps. Google's conversational AI built directly into the app.
Instead of searching "petrol stations near me" or "restaurant on the way to Jaipur," you can now ask in plain language:
"Find a scenic route from Ahmedabad to Udaipur with a lunch stop"
"What are interesting stops between Pune and Goa?"
"Avoid highways, I want the coastal road"
Ask Maps pulls from Google's entire knowledge graph reviews, photos, hours, ratings and serves results in context, not just as a list of pins.
How to access it: Tap the search bar in Google Maps → look for the "Ask" prompt or the sparkle (✨) icon. Available on Android and iOS.
⛽ Step 2: Let AI Optimise Your Route, Not Just Shorten It
Most people use Google Maps to find the fastest route. But the AI now lets you optimise for things that actually matter on a road trip:
Fuel-efficient routes — Maps calculates elevation, speed patterns, and traffic to suggest routes that use less fuel (great for long highway drives)
EV charging stops — If you're in an electric vehicle, it auto-plans charging breaks based on your battery level and charger availability
Scenic routes — A dedicated filter now surfaces roads with high visual ratings from other travellers
Toll-free alternatives — Toggle off tolls and Maps reroutes automatically
Pro tip: Hit "Route options" before starting navigation, this is where all the smart filters live. Most travellers never open it.
📍 Step 3: Build a Multi-Stop Road Trip Itinerary Inside Maps
Google Maps now supports full multi-stop trip planning with AI-assisted suggestions between stops.
Here's how:
Tap Directions
Add your starting point
Hit "Add stop" — you can add up to 9 stops
Tap "Suggest stops" — Maps will recommend places between your locations based on category (food, fuel, viewpoints, attractions)
Drag and reorder stops to rearrange your day
Maps will calculate total trip time including breaks, and show you when to leave to avoid traffic at each leg of the journey.
🌦️ Step 4: Use Live Layers to Avoid the Unexpected
One of the most underused features: Map Layers.
Tap the layers icon (stacked squares) and enable:
Traffic layer — Live colour-coded congestion, updated in real time
Air quality layer — Useful for mountain or industrial route planning
Weather overlay (available in select regions) — See rain or storm patterns along your route before you leave
During the drive, Maps' AI also sends proactive alerts , things like "accident ahead, alternate route saves 18 minutes" , without you asking. It just quietly reroutes and tells you why.
🏨 Step 5: Book Hotels and Restaurants Without Leaving the App
Once your route is planned, Maps now integrates directly with booking platforms.
Tap any hotel or restaurant pin and you'll see:
Live availability and pricing (via Google's hotel partnerships)
"Reserve a table" button for restaurants using Google's booking integration
AI-generated summary of recent reviews not just a star rating, but why people loved or hated it
This means you can go from "I wonder if there's a good place to stay in Jodhpur" to a confirmed booking in under 2 minutes, without switching apps.
